Founded in 1983 in Essex, Uniscan is the creator and world’s leading manufacturer of ultra-lightweight three and four-legged walking frames.

The Uniscan walker was invented by Tom Morris who whilst in his 9th decade is still very hands on, turning up to work every day of the week. However, he leaves the day to day running of the business to his son Geoff. Back in 1983 there was only one model available in one colour. Today there are six four-legged and two three-legged models; all featuring a built in rest seat. There are a variety of frame sizes, four frame widths plus a choice of two braking systems (four leg walkers only). All models are available in a choice of five standard or two premium colours along with a range of accessories. Every new Uniscan walker is supplied with a comprehensive two year manufacturer warranty, offering peace of mind to customers (be it the end user or the retailer).

While some customers visit the Essex showroom to try out different models and discuss the options available, the Uniscan range is also available through a network of over 200 retailers throughout the UK. Unlike many equipment manufacturers in the independent living market, Uniscan continues to produce all its products in the UK, a fact which they are very proud. In 2015, Uniscan is exhibiting at several UK exhibitions including Trade Days (18-19 October, Birmingham NEC) and The OT Show (25-26 November, Birmingham NEC). Visitors to either show will have the opportunity to see the range of Uniscan walkers and discuss potential retailer opportunities and client requirements.

Glider Plus Adjustable - Green smallerWhat inspired you to start Uniscan back in 1983?

The inspiration for the Uniscan walker came from Tom Morris’s mother-in-law Daisy. Daisy’s friend Sue had been using a Zimmer for several years and mentioned that, while it helped her, it was not ideal as she had to manually lift it up over any obstacles such as door steps and kerbs. It also took up a large amount of space in the car as it did not fold. Daisy was in need of a walker herself and spoke to Tom about the problem Sue was having and her own concerns about having to use this type of walker. Three months later, Tom had designed and built the world’s first lightweight folding rollater with an integral rest seat.

What are the main changed you have seen in the industry in the past 30 years?

Over the last 30 years the main changes within our injury have without doubt been the advances in technology and materials along with the level of choice. Our latest models are still based on the tried, tested and proven A frame design from over 30 years ago. However, over time new design ideas, including additional models, utilisation of new, more modern materials have been embraced and incorporated in to the Uniscan product portfolio. We pride ourselves on our customers service and listening and responding to customer feedback. Prime examples of this are: the recent development on our four-leg models of a new frame locking lever which is painted red to help partially sighted users; the addition of a new catch on our Triumph model to ensure the storage bag lid remains closed even in strong winds.
