Ellen Green, managing director of the Bristol-based Blue Badge Company, has been named Young Entrepreneur of the year at the 2015 Bristol and Bath Women in Business Awards.
With more entries than ever before, the winners of this year’s awards faced stiff competition. But, recognising the rapid growth of her fledgling company, the judges selected 30 year-old Ellen as Young Entrepreneur of the year presenting her with the prize at a glitzy ceremony on 19 March at Bristol’s city centre Marriot Hotel.
In 2012 Ellen took on sole ownership of Blue Badge Company – a manufacturer of stylish Blue Badge holders and other accessories. Since then she has grown the business from a small back-bedroom operation into a thriving venture, leading the way in its field.
Speaking after the ceremony, Ellen expressed her gratitude to see her hard work recognised, ‘’I’m so chuffed to have won this illustrious award,’’ she said.
‘’It means so much to be recognised for the achievements of Blue Badge Company. Anyone who runs their own business knows how hard it is, receiving an award like this really does make it all worthwhile.
‘’I have a lot to thank Bristol for. It is one of the greatest cities in the world! There are many exciting business here and I’m really proud to be part of the creative innovation that exists among this city’s entrepreneurs.’’
After brokering deals with some of the UK’s largest retail outlets, including Boots and the Post Office, Ellen has continued to grow the company making 2014 a record-breaking year.
But despite the success and ever larger orders, Ellen has continued to stay true to the ethics and ethos of the brand, something that clearly made her stand out from the crowd at this year’s awards.
“One of the reasons for wanting to set up and pursue Blue Badge Company was that I was really disappointed with the products that were available,’’ she said.
‘’Anyone who had any kind of mobility impairment was being offered clinical and dull products. I just thought we can do better than this.”
Ellen currently employs more than 20 members of staff, 40 per cent of whom suffer with disabilities themselves.
She has been working with Bristol-based charity Pluss which helps people with long term disabilities get back into work.
So what next? 2015 has seen Blue Badge Company join forces with specialist disabled insurance company Fish Insurance. They will be offering 5,000 new customers Blue Badge wallets designed exclusively for the promotion.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us because it not only gets our products out there and in people’s hands but sees us joining forces with a very reputable brand. Fish’s brand, core values and policies are very much aligned with ours. It’s a great fit,’’ said Ellen.
